Val di Fassa: from the dolomite peaks to cross-country

A real paradise for the cross-country skiing with more than 50 km of pistes surrounded by breathtaking landscapes

A real paradise for the cross-country skiing with more than 50 km of pistes surrounded by breathtaking landscapes

Great snow-covered expanses, bracing air, the Dolomites and magic silence: these are the passwords for those who go cross-country skiing in Val di Fassa. We await you, from Moena to Canazei, with more than 50 km of pistes, immersed in suggestive scenery that reminds one of that of North Europe. Independently from the classic or free techniques, or from the skier’s level, the best thing of this sport is the direct contact with nature.

Listed below are all five of the cross-country ski areas in Val di Fassa (Passo San Pellegrino-Alochet, Pozza di Fassa, Mazzin-Campitello di Fassa, Canazei e Alba-Ciampac). Each file contains much useful information, such as pistes open, services offered and a detailed map of the routes.

The Ladin valley of Nordic skiing

An infinite number of routes wind along the bottom of the valley; two are practicable also in the evening, thanks to modern illumination systems: the Ciancoal circuit in Pozza di Fassa, particularly enjoyable because of its frequent changes in rhythm, and that of Fontanazzo for spending a little time relaxing in the moonlight. At a higher altitude, between 1.900 and 2.000 metres, one can train at the famous Centro Fondo Alochet at Passo San Pellegrino or at Ciampac (Alba di Canazei). Snow is guaranteed here from December to April.

Cross-country skiing is an aerobic sport, it requires a lot of energy and Val di Fassa is an ideal gym for starting out. Perhaps, with a little training, you could be one of the thousands of athletes who, on the last Sunday in January, meet in Moena to take part in the legendary "Marcialonga", the queen of the narrow skis. It is the only "gran fondo" (great cross-country) race in the Alps to have become as famous as the Swedish Vasaloppet. 70 km of uphill and downhill, starting from Moena and finishing in Cavalese, turning the buoy at Canazei and passing all the towns in the valleys of Fassa and Fiemme.
