Etymology: the origin of the name is not sure and rather controversial, it derives probably from the Latin word "Macinus", mill.
The village of Mazzin is located in a sunny position at the entrance of the Val Udai, along the road that runs parallel to the stream Avisio, and immersed in green, surrounded by woods and wild flower meadows.
In the 60s Mazzin became famous from a historical point of view because some archaeologists found traces of a population called Reti, the ancient inhabitants of the valley (neither Roman nor Barbarian - V century b.C.) whose language is at the origin of the Ladin language. Rests of an ancient castle, bronze jewels and defense tools were found on the Doss dei Pigui, on the left side of the stream Avisio, in front of the settlement of Mazzin and can be seen today at the Ladin Museum in Pozza di Fassa.
Mazzin has experienced a remarkable tourism development in the past years but even nowadays it still keeps a strong link with traditional architecture and farming culture as "Cèsa Battel" - the last example of a manor house in the whole valley - shows.
The village is also known as the place of "pitores", painters, the decorators that used to emigrate every year in search of fame. They used to write home painted cards about their journeys and experiences.
In winter, thanks to an efficient skibus service, from Mazzin it is possibile to reach the lifts in a few minutes. Moreover, cross-country skiers have a direct access to the Marcialonga slope in both directions - Canazei and Moena - and can practise their favourite discipline also at night, at the lighted cross-country rink of Campestrin and Fontanazzo.
In summer Mazzin is the starting point of many popular excursions, such as the one to Lago d’Antermoia, a legendary lake situated on the northern mountainside of the Catinaccio group.
