Val di Fassa is renowned for its wide choice of walks. You can stroll freely on the many paths surrounded by woods, among small waterfalls and flowering fields. What if you add to your excursion a visit to a mountain dairy? In Val di Fassa there are a lot of shepherd’s huts where, from the middle of June to the middle of September, you can discover the secrets of Alpine pasture. The so called "malghe" (mountain dairies) are vital for the land preservation, a kind of real guardians for the maintenance of territorial balance. They are rural buildings, made of stone and wood, used as summer shelters for cattle. Next to the farmer’s house, usually hosting the rooms for the cheese production, there is the stable, which is generally a long shaped building. In the different malghe you can observe the milking practice, buy traditional dairy products or taste fresh-made ricotta, cheese, butter, yoghurt, as well as home-made cakes and genuine speck. You will also experience the simplicity of mountain life, as a real Alpine farmer. The flavour of cheese produced up in the malghe cherishes the pure air of Dolomites, the crystal clear waters and the smell of high mountain fields blowing in the breez.
Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday you have the possibility to participate in the guided excursion to the mountain dairy (i.e. Andar per Malghe) organized by the Val di Fassa Tourist Board. Compulsory enrolment with Val di Fassa Card.
