Sounds of the Dolomites (I Suoni delle Dolomiti) is a unique high altitude music festival which brings musicians from across the world to the most beautiful mountains of the Alps. The idea is simple and at the same time fascinating: to combine the passion for music and the mountains, art and the environment, in a concert programme celebrating freedom and nature. Participants set off from the valley floor and head for clearings and hollows near the mountain refuges, natural theatres in which the music is performed in complete harmony with the surroundings. The festival features internationally renowned artists who, instruments on their shoulders, display their shared regard for the environment by joining the public in walking to the concert venues, on what is both an art and a nature trail. It’s the outcome of the cooperation between Trentino Marketing and the Val di Fassa Tourist Board.
Sounds of the Dolomites: Avi Avital, Giovanni Sollima. Great innovators explore the sounds of the 21st century with cello and mandolin. Micheluzzi Refuge - Val Duron (Campitello di Fassa), at 12.00 p.m.
Programme: born in Be′er Sheva, in southern Israel, Avi Avital began studying mandolin at the age of eight and while still young he joined the mandolin orchestra directed by Russian-born violinist Simche Nathanson. He studied at the Jerusalem Music Academy and then the Cesare Pollini Conservatory in Padua. In 2007, he was the first mandolin player in history to be honoured at the prestigious Aviv Competition in Israel. He is now an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist and has performed with some of the world’s top orchestras - including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin - and is much sought after on the international festival circuit. An internationally-renowned Italian cellist, Giovanni Sollima is also one of the world’s most accomplished composers. He has worked with musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Viktoria Mullova and Mario Brunello, and has played with the Teatro della Scala Orchestra, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but his wide-ranging creativity has seen him engage with diverse milieus and incorporate the genius of Patti Smith, Stefano Bollani, Paolo Fresu, Peter Greenaway and John Turturro. Returning to the Dolomites will be an undeniable delight for him.
