From 11th to 21st December 2013 Trentino hosts the 26th edition of the Winter Universiade, the biggest international biennial multi-sport event after the Winter Olympic Games. The Universiade sums up in its name three important meanings: sports, university and universality. Official promoter of these values is FISU, the International University Sports Federation, responsible for the governance and organisation of worldwide competitions for university student-athletes.
During the eleven days of competitions, 480 medals will be awarded, and the events involve not only the city of Trento, but also its entire Province. More than 3.000 people are expected to reach Trentino, including athletes, managers, and partners from 50 countries. Five valleys (Trento-Monte Bondone, Val di Fassa, Val di Fiemme, Valsugana, Altopiano di Pinè-Valle di Cembra) will host 13 snow sports and ice sports: Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Sport Curling, Ice Hockey, Speed Skating, Short Track, Figure Skating and Synchronized Skating. Val di Fassa was selected to host the alpine skiing competitions (Giant Slalom M/W and Slalom M/W on the slope Ski Stadium Aloch in Pozza di Fassa; Downhill M/W and Super G M/W on the slope Cima Uomo at San Pellegrino Pass), the men’s ice hockey tournament and the closing ceremony (Ice Stadium G. Scola in Alba di Canazei).
The Universiade’s headquarter is the university city of Trento, where the opening ceremony will take place. The new sport building of San Bartolameo, which is the residence for university students (South Trento), will host the main operation centre, accreditation procedures, information practices, the main press centre and will be the seat for international broadcasting TVs, while athletes and officials will be accommodated close to their competition venues.
Trentino took over from Erzurum (Turkey) and passes the baton to Granada (Spain) for the edition 2015. Up to now Italy has already held several winter University Games: in Livigno in 1975, Nevegal in 1985, Tarvisio in 2003, and Torino in 2007. Summer games were held in Torino in 1959 and in 1979, and Sicily in 1997.
