Openining times: from June to October

Description: the military artefacts found on the Marmolada over many years by the De Bernardin family from Rocca Pietore are full of significance and memories. In 1997 Andrea De Bernardin brought to life an interesting collection at the foot of that very mountain with its "City of Ice" ("Città di Ghiaccio"), that has become a symbol of the First World War. The Great War Museum 1914-1918 at Fedaia Pass offers a substantial exhibition of objects preserved in the ice on one of the conflict’s highest buttle-fiels: military uniforms, shotguns, cannons, binoculars, skies, harpoons, photographs, maps and much more. The chance to watch some films from the period and a bookshop complete this exhibition.

The "City of Ice" ("Die Eisstadt auf Dodici"). The encampments, some as much as 50 m below the surface, was the brilliant idea of Austrian engineer Lieutenant Leo Handl and enabled the soldiers to get to the Austrian first line out of the line of fire of Italian shooters positioned above the glacier on the "Serauta" ridge. Nowadays the legendary site built inside the Marmolada have been cancelled by the action of nature that has hidden the war memories in the ice to preserve these moments of everyday life and human heroism forever.
