Great War Map

August 1914: Val di Fassa, by that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire just like the test of Trentino-Alto Adige, began to experience one of the most tragic moments of its history that has definitely marked not only the land but the culture and the everyday life as well. Starting from the following year, in fact, Val di Fassa became theatre of fightings and battles between the Austro-Hungarian Army and the Royal Italian Army, both gathering their troops along the border in the Marmolada area (the White War), along the Costabella ridge (the Alpinistic War) and in Cima Bocche (the War of the Infantry).

Mountains that turned out to be lines of a front where, in some areas, the two armies were separated only by a few metres. Here the trenches dug into the rocks or the ground, the remains of the barracks and huts and the war relics collected and exposed in the local museums by historians and collectors testify that human tragic experience.

Some war sites, such as the historic routes of the San Pellegrino area, can be visited and are constantly cared by the members of the historic association "Sul Fronte dei Ricordi" while other ones are now under restoration but can be visited anyway. But other sites such as the legendary "City of Ice" built inside the Marmolada Glacier have been cancelled by the action of nature that has hidden these memories in the ice to preserve these moments of everyday life and human heroism forever.

The Great War Map is available at every Tourist Offices of Val di Fassa, without any payment being required.

Map of Nordic walking trails

Nordic walking began as a new outdoor walking discipline aimed at relaxation and fitness. It consists on walking on mountain paths, fields and valleys, equipped with special poles to make 90% of the body’s muscles move, simultaneously using one’s arms, legs, chest, shoulders and neck. Originally practised by cross country skiers for summer training, this discipline has grown enormously in recent years because it is a low impact activity which does not stress one’s body joints and can be practised by everybody, in deep contact with the nature.
