The refuge Pian dei Fiacconi awaits ski mountaineers and expert excursionists in March, April and even in May (against reservation)
On the Queen of the Dolomites, the freeride season officially begins on February 29th with the opening of the refuge Pian dei Fiacconi (2626 m). The ski alpinists have already ventured in the area, but the best moment for ski mountaineering on Marmolada is spring: March and April are perfect months, and so is May, depending on the snowfalls. Guido Trevisan, who has been running the refuge Pian dei Fiacconi for twenty years, knows it. He and his partners Davide Menegazzi (who has been the custodian of the Capanna Punta Penia, at 3343 metres), Stefano Cattarina and Sirio Pedrotti (they also run the Rifugio Capanna Ghiacciaio together), have open the doors of the alpine hut at the foot of the glacier, intentioned to work non-stop until the end of September.
The snowfalls of the first days of March give the right energy to the aficionados chasing the places with the best fresh snow and the North wall of the Queen of the Dolomites, in the area of Trentino, is one of the privileged destinations for these discipline, totally in harmony with the nature.
The season seems to begin in the right way, so, thus differently from the past: this year, the basket lift from the Fedaia pass to Pian dei Fiacconi, has been shut down after 45 years, waiting for the realization of a new lift, a cabin lift that should lead from Fedaia to Capanna Ghiacciaio, but which doesn’t have a project and a start of construction date. So, the refuge Pian dei Fiacconi, for the first time, will be reachable only with the skins and the supplies will be brought up with an old snow cat. "The baskets do not work anymore – Guido Trevisan tells – but the refuge Pian dei Fiacconi will open as it is tradition. Those who know us know that we believe in a sustainable tourism, able to live the mountain even without the comfort of the mountain lifts. We have been claiming for years that the mountain, in the present case the Marmolada, can live even without the lifts: it is the Queen of the Dolomites, a beautiful place as well as the only alpine glacier and freeride paradise. This will be the year when we discover if we are just romantic or if our mountains are still loved even when a bit of effort is necessary to reach them. We believe that our friends mountaineers and tourists come to the Marmolada because it is a magic place. The efforts will not stop them, because looking around is enough to realise that it is totally worth it. We wait for you!" The refuge is open every day from the end of February to the end of September, upon reservation in May.
