Description: it is one of the four passes of the Strada delle Dolomiti, built at the beginning of the 20th century to link Bolzano with Cortina that helped in the developing of tourism in the Ladin valleys. A road with 28 bends (12 km from Canazei), loved by motorcyclists, leads to Pordoi Pass, where the eye is captured by the Sassolungo and the Sella group, with a view on the Marmolada glacier.
The pass is enclosed between the Sass Pordoi and the Sass Becè and stands as a boarderline between the provinces of Trento and Belluno.
It’s very important from a historical point of view, since many battles of the first world war were fought on the Pordoi, witnessed today by a German charnel house. Tourism developed on the pass thanks to Maria Piaz, sister of the famous alpinist Tita Piaz. The Pordoi is and has often been stage of many important bike races, such as the Giro d’Italia, and hosts the Fausto Coppi monument.
In summer Pordoi Pass is a starting point not only for difficult high-level walks and via ferratas but also for easy excursions apt to the whole family, such as the "Viel dal Pan", an ancient path that was used by merchants to reach Veneto or Trentino.
The cable way takes you onto the Sass Pordoi, the so called Terrace of the Dolomites, at an altitude of almost 3.000 m.
In winter from the pass one can easily reach, skis on, the Belvedere-Col Rodella ski area, Arabba and so have direct access to the Sellaronda Ski Tour.
