Description: above Passo San Pellegrino (10 km from Moena) is an imposing block of porphyry, standing at 2,513m. This is Col Margherita, part of the Bocche chain, a ridge which separates the valley of San Pellegrino from the valley of the Travignolo. The viewpoint can be easily reached using the cable car, also on foot in the summer, or ski mountaineering in winter. The north face is steep and rocky, while to the south the slopes are gentle and undulating.
Col Margherita was the site of bitter battles during the First World War, due to its strategic position. Today it is one of the most evocative viewpoints of the Val di Fassa, with the crests of Costabella, Cima Uomo and the Marmolada right opposite. To the right you will see the Cime D’Auta, the Soraiss, the Pelmo, the Civetta, the Cima di Focobon and the Mulaz, then the Pale di San Martino and the long chain of Lagorai.
In order to guide visitors and help them reach the best viewpoints, two boards containing geological info and the names of the surrounding peaks have been installed along the path that goes from Col Margherita to Cima Juribrutto. The informative panel boards are located inside two terraces built with porphyry stones: the former faces Passo San Pellegrino, the latter the Pale di San Martino.
