Description: Sass Pordoi, in the upper part of Val di Fassa, can be reached by the cable car (both in summer and in winter) from Pordoi Pass (12 km from Canazei), which, in only 4 minutes, takes you up to 2,950 m. The mountains which surround you emerged from the oceans millions of years ago, and appear extraordinarily close. The Marmolada, the Sassolungo, the Sella, the Catinaccio, and a little further away, the basin of Ampezzo. Then the Ortles and Cevedale groups, and on to the Swiss and Austrian Alps. From the top of Pordoi you can also clearly see numerous paths and "vie ferrate" which criss-cross the blocks of Dolomite.
The legend of Cianbolpin tells of the love lost and found again of a young shepherd from Canazei for Donna Chenina, a stunningly beautiful "vivana" living on the slopes of Pordoi. After falling in love with her, Cianbolpin left her after some time to go back to his village that he missed too much. But he found it completely changed and had to go through a long series of vicissitudes amoung ogres, bandits and magical mantels before being able to return to Donna Chenina. This legend is present in several different versions in the entire Alpine range and is a classical tale of the Fassa valley tradition.
Autumn in Val di Fassa opens with the Top Wine Symposium 2.950, the most exclusive event dedicated to the wine growers of Trentino, which is scheduled in October at the Refuge Maria at Sass Pordoi. Top Wine, Italy’s highest tasting appointment, is a unique chance to discover and appreciate the regional wines, in the presence of the Dolomites. Together with sparkling, white and red wines, many typical products of Val di Fassa are present.
In July, hundreds runners will compete to conquest the most spectacular Val di Fassa’s peaks, surrounded by the stunning Dolomites that are Natural World Heritage. Canazei is the protagonist of the world skyrunning with the Dolomyths Run Skyrace, which is the most awaited competition from the sky runners: 22 km (10 up and 12 down), a difference in altitude of 1,750m, starting from Piaz Marconi (the central square) and reaching the Piz Boè (the highest competition’s point at 3.152 mt., in the impressive Sella Group scenery), descending through the Val Lasties, Pian de Schiavaneis and back to the village.
