Memorable pages of history have been written on the Dolomites, in particular during the First World War: the border line between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy crossed Val di Fassa in all its length, from the Marmolada to "Costabella", "Juribrutto" and "Cima Bocche". Today there are several itineraries and routes which lead to trenches and lookout posts where traces of the global conflict are clearly visible, traces which for the most part, with the help of careful research and historical reconstruction, have been kept alive in mobile exhibitions and small museums (including some private ones). The numerous objects, equipment, relics, arms, munitions and much more lead you to dip into the past to better understand the epic struggle of Italian and Austrian soldiers, who fought the more exhausting war ever, at an high altitude among rocks and ice. The Marmolada Museum, the highest in Europe at 2,950 m set in "Serauta" cable car top-station, invites you to remember and honour, impartially and aside from all political and national ideologies, all the men that lived on ice, in the freezing cold and in the darkness of tunnels, who fought bravely, suffered and died for their country. In the Great War Museum at Fedaia Pass, recently renovated, you can find a lot of relics, photos, arms and munitions of the First World War.
