After the exertions of the fourth stage, the Val di Fassa Running concludes in the square of Campitello, where athletes, fans and curious onlookers gather to share a moment of celebration. On stage, it's time for the official awards ceremony: the winners are greeted by the applause of the crowd and the lively atmosphere of the town centre. Afterwards, local expert Gabriele Valentini will guide the audience through a fascinating account of the Great War fought in Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites.
The outbreak of the First World War had a profound impact on the territory and the recent history of the valley. It was in the Fassa mountains that the Italian-Austrian front line was drawn, with the formation in Marmolada of a military stronghold below freezing: the famous "City of Ice". Did you know that this extraordinary underground structure was entirely carved out of ice and equipped with barracks, dormitories, infirmaries and even a small chapel? How did the soldiers survive in such extreme conditions, at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, in tunnels that were freezing and damp all year round? And have you ever wondered how supplies were transported up there, amid snowstorms and polar temperatures?
At 9 p.m. in the main square of the village. In case of bad weather, the event will be held at the events pavilion "Ischia", near the "Col Rodella" cable car. The meeting will be in Italian.
