In the streets of Penìa, at nightfall, Saint Nicholas appears accompanied by some angels and the dreaded Krampus to distribute gifts and sweets only to deserving children
In keeping with Ladin tradition, on the evening of 5 December, starting at 5.30 p.m., Saint Nicholas will make his entrance into the small square in Penìa. He will be welcomed with music, the aroma of mulled wine and hot tea, along with some delicious sweets for young and old alike.
Dressed in red, with a mitre and crozier, the Saint will be accompanied by two angels who will help him carry his basket full of gifts, and by the feared "Krampus", the devils, ready to add a touch of excitement to the evening. After stopping in the square, Saint Nicholas will visit the houses in the village: the Krampus will remain outside the door... unless there are any naughty children who need to be called to order for their misbehaviour over the past year.
Penìa is the last town in Fassa that one encounters on the way up from Moena. In this village, almost perched on the slopes of the Marmolada, extraordinary historical buildings are preserved, including "Cèsa Dovolavilla", the typical Fassa residence ("majon") equipped with a bread oven, the small church of Saints Rocco and Sebastian in the square with its fountain and other rural buildings with characteristic wooden balconies. In addition, Penìa and Alba are the custodians of the oldest rites and customs, handed down from generation to generation, such as the arrival of Saint Nicholas, the "Pèsca Tofenia" (Epiphany) and the Ladin Carnival.
