In the early 20th century, the SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) built eight refuges in the “cube” architectural style typical of that period. The Rifugio Monzoni Torquato Taramelli is the only one that still has this singular shape. Unlike other refuges, built to serve the mountaineering community, the Monzoni Torquato Taramelli was built to assist geological studies in the Monzoni area and ... is still “the students’ refuge”, now in the hands of SUSAT, the university section of the SAT. Don’t be surprised if you find a youthful, lively atmosphere there (they even hold cake-making classes), with a few youngsters helping to run the refuge in summer as part of a working holiday programme. Walks The Rifugio Vallaccia (to the east) and the Rifugio Bergvagabunden Hütte (to the west) can both be reached in just over 1 hour on easy footpaths (difficulty E). Much more challenging is the circular route connecting the three refuges via the Bruno Federspiel protected path which follows paths of the Great War on the Monzoni ridges.
