10 rules for making the most of your stay in Val di Fassa
Every environment deserves attention and respect: that's why it's useful to remember these guidelines, which will allow you to enjoy the area in a conscious manner. The mountains are not just a place to visit, but an environment to be experienced with care, curiosity and respect. Every trail, every forest, every village tells a story of nature, people and traditions that deserve your time and attention. This guide has been created to accompany you step by step, with simple and practical advice designed to help you explore the valley in a mindful and authentic way. Small gestures that make the experience richer for you and more harmonious for those who live in the mountains every day. And if you find yourself in difficulty, remember that the single emergency number is 112 and that the Where Are U app allows you to call for help by quickly communicating your location.
1. Get up early and breath in the mountains
The first rays of light transform the Dolomites into a unique spectacle. Even on holiday, waking up a little earlier will give you precious time to enjoy the trails, views and experiences in peace and tranquillity.
2. Respect nature and its inhabitants
Flowers, plants and mushrooms should be left where they are: mountain flora is delicate and should be observed without being picked or trampled on. Wild animals should be approached with discretion, from a distance and in silence, without attempting to approach or feed them. Always stay on marked trails and pay attention to large carnivores, such as wolves, which are part of the natural balance of these territories. In case of unusual sightings or animals in distress, keep your distance and report the situation to the relevant authorities.
3. Only take memories... and rubbish back down the valley
Paper, peelings, tissues, everything comes back with you. If you are travelling with a dog, keep it on a leash and pick up its waste (and no abandoned bags!). It's a small gesture that makes a big difference
4. Pure water yes, but with common sense
The water from public fountains is fresh, drinkable and readily available. Avoid drinking directly from streams and lakes: protect your health and always carry a water bottle with you to fill up in the village.
5. Travel consciously
Reduce your environmental impact: leave your car parked and use public transport, which is free with the Trentino / Val di Fassa Guest Card. Whenever possible, walk or cycle: here, every step counts double.
6. Know your limits - and respect them
Before setting off, find out about the weather, trail conditions and environment you are about to face. In the mountains, it is not just the distance that counts, but above all the elevation gain and altitude: if you are not used to long walks in everyday life, it is important to choose routes that are suitable for your level. Avoid tackling challenging crossings without the right training: being honest with yourself is the first step to enjoying the experience. Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. In case of difficulty, the single emergency number is 112, and the Where Are U app helps rescuers locate you quickly.
7. Equip yourself properly
In the mountains, it is important to be prepared. It is best to choose suitable footwear and dress in layers, which is a good habit to adopt in any season. Even in summer, it is advisable to bring technical clothing, suitable sunscreen and a warmer garment for when you climb to higher altitudes. In winter, helmets are compulsory on the slopes, while for off-piste activities it is advisable to find out about safety rules and correct behaviour. To enjoy the experience in peace, you can always rely on qualified professionals, such as Alpine Guides or mid-mountain guides, who are ready to provide information or accompany you on excursions.
8. Discover Ladin culture
Learn at least one word in Ladin, such as bondì, telpai or stajé ben. Try traditional dishes, from ciajoncie to fortae. Discover the history of the valley and the legends that enrich it by visiting local museums. Remember that churches and other places of cultural interest may have specific guidelines for behaviour: always find out about the rules to follow during visits.
9. Don't just look at the mountains through a screen
Photos are a wonderful way to take home a memory, but in the mountains it is also worth living in the moment. Feel free to take pictures along the way, but be careful not to stop in the middle of the path or get in the way of others. A little extra care helps everyone enjoy the experience. Also, remember to respect people's privacy, especially during festivals, events and traditional re-enactments.
10. Take home something that doesn't weigh down your suitcase
A deeper sense of respect for nature, a new word, an unexpected flavour, a view that remains in your eyes and heart: these are the best souvenirs of a trip to Val di Fassa.
