A small village in the park, created by the people of Canazei: wooden huts, local specialities, large snow sculptures and a pergola where people can gather, from late morning until the lights come on
In Canazei, the Christmas market takes place in the public park, just a short walk from the centre. From 11:00 am to 7:00 pm (from 3:00 pm on Christmas Day) and until 27 December, the wooden huts lining the path create a natural route among decorated trees, fairy lights and large snow sculptures. In the centre, a large, festively decorated pergola becomes a meeting place: you can sit down, have a bite to eat and, when the time comes, the same space hosts concerts and shows.
Here, behind the stalls, you'll find above all Canazei and its people. There are local producers and craftspeople, traders you may already have come across in the village streets, voluntary organisations and the local Alpini group. In the huts, you'll discover local specialities, handcrafted goods and gift ideas, with the added bonus of meeting the people who make, create or have selected them.
Whatever time you arrive, there's something warm to treat yourself to - sweet or savoury - whether you eat it sitting down or carry on browsing. Meanwhile, the afternoon draws on, the December days grow shorter and the twinkle of the festive lights gradually takes the place of daylight.
And then there's the name: Maitin. In Ladin, it refers to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, linked to the anticipation of the Baby Jesus and the presents. A local word that captures precisely those days when waiting was as much a part of Christmas as the celebration itself. And perhaps it's no coincidence that this market was created as a place to come together, pause and wait for Christmas together.
