Before reaching the military posts, the route begins with a pleasant walk along the Nature Trail that leads from "Valbona" to the La Rezila mountain hut. The first section is immersed in the tranquillity of the woods and the scent of fir and larch trees, perfect for tuning into the rhythm of the mountains and letting yourself be carried away by time. From here, continue along an easy forest road that climbs with wide hairpin bends to the "Colvere" clearing, a strategic and panoramic point overlooking the Alpe di Lusia. It is here that you will find the first Austrian gun emplacement: an austere structure, dug into the ground and cemented. What was it used for? What did it defend? Where were those guns aimed? These questions arise spontaneously amid the silence of the pastures and the echoes of the past. But it is as you venture deeper into the dense, silent forest, protected by the vegetation, that the defensive heart of the entire complex is revealed: an intricate network of trenches, tunnels and emplacements, built to keep the San Pellegrino Pass, the nerve centre of the Dolomite front, under fire. These places tell a story of strategy, but also of sacrifice, hard work and courage. A journey through refuges, invisible lines to defend and young Austro-Hungarian soldiers, ready to live - and die - in extreme conditions, for an ideal, for their homeland, out of obedience or hope. After visiting the historical site, return to Chalet Valbona for a lunch with authentic mountain flavours. From there, you can descend to the valley by gondola or, if you wish, continue uphill to "Le Cune" (2,200 m) for a final panoramic view of these places marked by history.
