A guided excursion to experience first-hand the life of Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the First World War, exploring trenches, emplacements and observation posts in "Colvere", on the Alpe Lusia
Before reaching the military posts, the route begins with a pleasant walk - accompanied by our mountain guides - along the Nature Trail leading from Valbona to the La Rezila mountain hut. The first section is immersed in the tranquillity of the woods and the scent of fir and larch trees - the perfect way to tune into the rhythm of the mountains and gently step back in time. From here, we continue along an easy forest road that climbs in wide bends to the Colvere clearing, a strategic panoramic point overlooking the Alpe Lusia. It is here that you will find the first Austrian gun emplacement: an austere concrete structure dug into the ground. What was it used for? What did it defend? Where were those guns aimed? The answers begin to emerge as you venture deeper into the dense, silent forest. Here, the defensive heart of the entire complex is revealed: a network of trenches, tunnels and military posts built to keep the San Pellegrino Pass, a key point on the Dolomite front, under control. These places tell a story of strategy, but also of sacrifice, hardship and courage. A journey along invisible defensive lines and in the footsteps of young Austro-Hungarian soldiers, who were forced to live in extreme conditions - driven by ideals, obedience, fear or hope. After visiting the historical site, we return to Chalet Valbona for the lunch.
