Mazzin, together with the hamlets of Campestrin and Fontanazzo, has a population of around 500 and is situated at one of the narrowest points of Val di Fassa, where the view takes in the faces of the Catinaccio d'Antermoia, the Sella Group, Cima Dodici and Col Bel.
Once a land of mills, the village was also known for its painters and decorators, who would migrate seasonally in search of work and fortune.
Travelling up the Dolomites road from Pera, the church of Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente appears on the right shortly after the bend leading into the village. Built in 1573, the church retains a simple single-nave structure, with a Gothic apse, a bell tower topped with a pyramidal spire and a Baroque altar.
