Near the Varòs ridge, some positions, tunnels, and shelters of the Austrian artillery units from the First World War are still visible. Near the Prè de Contrin plateau are the remains of the largest barracks in the area, first occupied by the Bavarian Alpenkorps and later by the Standschützen from Castelrotto. Val Contrin was one of the access gates to the first Austrian lines of the Marmolada. In fact,... Rifugio Contrin or Contrinhaus was the site of the Austrian zone command, destroyed in September 1915 by Italian artillery commanded by the famous Captain Arturo Andreoletti.
