Water and shade: little things to keep in mind on hot days

Always allow your dog free access to fresh water. Ensure that pets that spend time outdoors, particularly as the warmer weather approaches, always have access to shelter from the sun. Avoid going for walks during the hottest hours of the day - stick to the morning or early evening - and always have a water bottle and a bowl with you.

Avoid strenuous exercise with your dog in very hot weather.

To be on the safe side, give your dog water from its own bowl, avoiding communal bowls left outside bars and shelters wherever possible.

Be careful when swimming in rivers. In mountain streams, the water can be very cold and cause cold water shock. Avoid unexpected dips and take a towel and a blanket with you to dry and wrap up your dog after a swim, paying particular attention to their ears.
