Built at the end of the 19th century by the Nuremberg Alpenverein, many know it as the mountaineers’ refuge, but a hundred years ago - in September 1915, during the Great War - this mountain chalet was occupied by the Austrian army. The Alpine troops destroyed the building with a mortar, but it was the same “Black Feathers” who inaugurated it around 10 years later, after receiving it as a gift from ... the State and from SAT and after having rebuilt it exactly where it was. Now the Rifugio Contrin - one of the most welcoming in the Dolomites - is still an important refuge for the Alpine troops, but, above all, in the summer it’s a destination for many walkers who make their way up from the Valle di Fassa and a base for climbers wanting to traverse the summits of the Marmolada Group. Open From mid-June to late September Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the opening of the mountain hut Walks From the Refuge you can climb to the top of the Marmolada (Punta Penia) along the via ferrata on the west ridge (climbing route from Forcella Marmolada - 4 hours, difficulty EEA). Heading instead up and over Passo Ombretta, you can get to Rifugio Falier at the foot of the south face of the Marmolada (2 ½ hours, difficulty EE). Other possible walks are to Rifugio Fuchiade (across Passo delle Cirelle - 3 hours, difficulty E). For anyone with more modest ambitions, the short walk from the refuge to nearby Malga Contrin is a must.
