Combining juggling, balance and acrobatics, this exhibition-workshop reveals the surprising connection between circus arts and the laws of physics
Circus arts combine emotion and technique, wonder and physical skill. Behind spectacular jumps, throws and acrobatics, however, there is also a great deal of science. Why does a diabolo stay balanced on the string only when it spins? How do the trajectories of hats and rings change depending on their shape and the force applied by the jugglers? And how can the movements of clubs and balls be translated into internationally recognised juggling patterns?
These are some of the questions explored by "Jocalo", the scientific exhibition-workshop organised by the Ladin School of Fassa. The project shines a spotlight on circus arts, explaining games, techniques and "wonders" of the circus through the laws of physics that govern movement and balance. The exhibition was conceived and created by students from class 3LSA of the Scientific High School in Sèn Jan and class 4D of the "Ulisse Dini" High School in Pisa, as part of a scientific collaboration between the two schools coordinated by teachers Thomas Zulian and Luca Riz for Val di Fassa, and Sabina Sarti for Pisa.
The Fassa-based juggling group Circensema also enthusiastically contributed to the design of the exhibition route and the creation of materials and multimedia content. For almost ten years, the group has promoted circus arts in the valley through performances, workshops and events of international level. Now in its 14th edition in 2026, the scientific exhibition project of the Ladin School of Fassa has explored a wide range of scientific fields over the years, from astronomy and probability theory to physics and geometry. For the students, it is an important opportunity to experience teamwork, tackle technical challenges and communicate science to audiences of all ages.
