From the panoramic porphyry balcony of Col Margherita, an easy path accompanies you on a journey through time, among ancient volcanoes, imposing glaciers, fossil sea bottoms and geological eras that have shaped this unique landscape. The symbolic heart of the route is the panoramic helm, located right on the summit. Completing the experience are a large timeline and didactic panels with stimulating activities, perfect for learning while observing the landscape. An adventure suspended between science and wonder, to be experienced step by step. The route can be undertaken independently. It is passable with a child carrier backpack (no stroller). Between 290 and 276 million years ago, this area was the site of massive explosive volcanic eruptions, which gave rise to the rocks of Col Margherita. The ground you walk on is a platform of brown-reddish rocks, called Ignimbrites (from Latin ignis = fire and imber = rain) or quartz-porphyries. These rocks were formed from the solidification of a magma that emerged from large volcanic cracks. The magma rapidly expanded for kilometers, forming glowing flows and giving rise to the South Tyrolean Porphyry Platform, a gigantic blanket of porphyries over 2 km thick and covering an area of almost 4,000 km², extending to Bolzano and Trento.
