Autumn has its own special spots
When summer gives way to autumn, Val di Fassa changes pace but doesn't close its doors. There are hotels to stay in, restaurants and pizzerias to dine at, farm stays and mountain huts that continue to welcome those who choose the Dolomites during the quietest time of the year.
It's the season of forests changing colour, leisurely walks, the first snow-capped peaks and a cuisine that returns to the richer flavours of the mountains. And knowing where to stay and where to eat makes it easy to plan a few days in the mountains without leaving anything to chance.

There's something special about slowing down. In autumn, you'll find it on the trails, in the woods, in the villages, during a break at the thermal baths or over a dish full of traditional flavours. But it's also the time for the rituals that prepare for winter: the cows return to the barns, the mountain cheeses are maturing, the sauerkraut rests in wooden barrels and almost artistic stacks of firewood grow outside the houses.
In the woods, people search for the last chanterelles, barley soups return to the table and the fires are lit again in the wood-burning stove. Village fairs are an opportunity to get together. Meanwhile, while the "tiejes" - the characteristic family huts - and mountain chapels prepare for their winter break, some are already dusting off their Krampus costumes in anticipation of St Nicholas' Day.
Now you know where to stop, stay and sit down for a meal. What happens next is up to the day.
