From Colorado to the 3,000-metre heights of Sass Pordoi, an all-female ensemble breathes new life into the great brass tradition in a concert that blends energy, Dolomite panoramas and the unique atmosphere of first light
I Suoni delle Dolomiti are unique encounters between music, nature and silence. In a theatre without walls, where the landscape becomes the stage, artists and audiences share the walk and the listening experience. Harmonies intertwine with the breath of the mountains in an experience that exists only here and now.
I Suoni delle Dolomiti: special project "Dawn of the Dolomites" (L'Alba delle Dolomiti). Belles of the Rockies. Sass Pordoi (Passo Pordoi), Wednesday 2 September at 6:00 am
Programme
Known as the "Terrace of the Dolomites", Sass Pordoi is rightly considered one of the most spectacular panoramic viewpoints not only in Trentino, but in the entire Alpine region. Reached by cable car from Passo Pordoi, with an ascent of 700 metres, it offers a 360° panorama over the Marmolada, Sassolungo, Catinaccio and Sella groups, with a close-up view of Piz Boè, the highest peak of the Sella Group. Against a backdrop like this - all the more so in the magical light of daybreak - the Belles of the Rockies are unlikely to miss their home state of Colorado too much. The young ensemble was formed while at university in the US state of Colorado and has already won one of the most prestigious competitions for brass ensembles in the United States. With backgrounds ranging from orchestra to jazz, from drum corps to musical theatre and chamber music, the Belles bring energy and creativity to every performance, as shown by the hundreds of thousands of views they have garnered on YouTube. Their inspiration comes from the women who, as pioneers, were the first to take up brass instruments in what was long considered a male-dominated field - and, of course, from the mountains they call home.
How to reach Sass Pordoi
Drive to Passo Pordoi (parking available at the cable car station or at the pass), then take the cable car, which will open exceptionally from 4:00 am for the occasion (capacity: 750 people per hour), followed by a short walk (5 minutes; elevation change: 30 metres; difficulty: E). Alternatively, you can walk directly from Passo Pordoi along trail no. 627 across scree slopes (2 hours; ascent: 700 metres; difficulty: E).
Admission to the concert is free. Visitors are advised to arrive at least one hour before the start of the concert and to wear clothing suitable for high altitude: a windproof jacket, hat, gloves, blankets, hiking boots and a torch.
In case of bad weather, the concert will take place at 5:30 pm at Marmolada theatre in Canazei. Free tickets will be distributed from 3:30 pm at the theatre box office, subject to availability.
